The Holdovers (2023)

When the New England prep school braces for Christmas, a gruff teacher is left to house a handful of wayward students. The Holdovers unfolds in a snow blanketed prep school, a quiet, brooding, uncomfortable drama that teeters between longing and restraint, and you feel the tension of a cramped classroom where institutional silence weighs heavily. Joaquin Phoenix brings quiet intensity through minimal dialogue, while Tessa Thompson's stoic presence as the head cook gives the story a warm unexpected core. If you appreciate subtle character studies that linger after the credits, this film will speak to you. A pacing hiccup in the mid act can drag some scenes longer than necessary, but the raw emotional payoff remains grounded.
