The Boy and the Heron (2023)

In the war‑shadowed silence of 1943 Japan, you find yourself floating in a world where grief feels like a living thing. That world turns surreal when a gray heron circles the town, its pale wings echoing the boy’s unseen past. From the very first frame, Hayao Miyazaki’s hand splashes watercolors that pulse with tinged sadness, turning the confrontation with loss into a surreal ballet. The heron’s slow, deliberate presence feels almost like a living clock, keeping time for your own untamed memories. It’ll leave you questioning reality, but the dreamlike mood lulls you into a quiet obsession that rarely hardens or rushes, though it sometimes lingers too long toward the end.
