Nightmare Alley (2021)

When a carnival hustler walks into a psychologist's office, you hear the tension crack like a scampered tent pole. The ache of ambition spills onto the screen, and Joaquin Phoenix delivers every moment silently, letting the story breathe. Natalie Portman's nuanced brow, a subtle tilt that marks danger before a line is spoken, anchors the film's psychological pull. You will find this noir‑inflected psychological thriller engaging if you savor atmosphere over exposition. A lingering stretch of the third act can feel slower than necessary, slightly pulling attention away from the crescendo.
