Death of a Unicorn (2025)

Your weekend begins with an ordinary road trip, then the shock of a unicorn vanishing under your windshield. The surreal clash between mundane reality and mythic tragedy makes Death of a Unicorn, a dark fantasy thriller, feel like a cautionary fable. Joaquin Phoenix, in a near-silent performance, turns the father into a reluctant savior, while Charlotte Rampling’s glamorous billionaire boss turns the plot into a commentary on greed. The practical effects that bring the creature to life are so immersive you lose your sense of scale, and the single long take of the climax jams your senses. Though the pacing slows slightly toward the end, the emotional payoff keeps you grounded in the characters’ turmoil.
