Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom (2023)

Seeing Asterix and Obelix trade their familiar Gaulish village for a bamboo-covered realm feels like a slapstick culture crash course. The film fuses the misunderstandings of a suprahuman slacker with the vibrant myths of a dynasty that never sleeps, turning each misstep into a fresh joke. The standout moment is a meticulously crafted clay animation sequence where an oversized bamboo staff morphs into a laughing dragon, turning the climax into a carnival of colour and sound. However, a stretch of the middle act drags as the script leans too heavily on visual gags, temporarily stalling the upward tempo of triumphs. You’ll laugh heart-deep with the whole family, especially those who cherish meat-based humour and a good scale-it-all showdown.
